Weeks of Great Fast: The Painting

During these weeks the faithful meditate on the public life of Jesus ending in Crucifixion and Burial. The road to the Cross shows this. The flowering and crowned Cross depicts Jesus’ victory over sin, death and Satan. Important events on this path are pictured on the sides. Raised hands and olive branches show Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The Paschal Lamb points to Jesus’ immolation on Gagulta. His self gift to humanity proclaimed in establishing the Holy Qurbana. The serpent around the stones shows Jesus’ fasting and temptation. The desert indicates Israel’s wandering in the wilderness and the Ark of the Covenant God’s consoling presence among them. The basic attitude of a believer during Great Fast is nothing but that of the Prodigal son.
