Weeks of Annunciation (Subara) is the first season of the liturgical year. The Syro-Malabar liturgical year begins with the proclamation and celebration of the historical encounter between God and man in the person of Jesus Christ, the human appearance of the Divine Person. The Syriac word Subara, 'Annunciation', with which the Church qualify the first five or six weeks of her liturgical year, is, in fact, an announcement and proclamation with celebration with this supreme glad news of divine condescension to the human frailty in order to raise it up to the divine sublimity. Importance of this day Koonan Cross Oath, Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara
On 3rd January 1653, Mar Thoma Nasranis gathered at Mattanchery in Cochin and took the Coonan Cross oath - the resolve to rid themselves of the colonial domination by Portuguese missionaries. Since the so-called Synod of Udayamperoor in 1599, the Portuguese and the hierarchy of the Latin Church exerted dominance on the Church of Nasranis. The Coonan Cross oath is the physical manifestation of the love the Nasranis had towards their apostolic Church and the resolve to protect it from invaders.
