Importance of this day Departed Faithful
St. Thomas Christians of Malabar remember the departed faithful on this day. According to Bishop Francis Roz (Report on Serra, written during 1601-10 AD), this feast was celebrated prior to the arrival of Portuguese missionaries in the coast of Malabar. He adds that on this day, the priests used to visit the cemetery with a cross and the graves were sprinkled with Holy water. This practice is still observed by the Syro-Malabar Church.

Prayer of the dayJesus the Lord and God of all spirits and all flesh, You have destroyed death, overcome the devil and given life to the world. Grant, O Lord, to Your servants who have departed this life that they may rest in a place of light, happiness and peace, where there is no pain, grief nor sighing. Since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive them every sin they have committed by thought, word or deed, for there is no one who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin, Your righteousness is everlasting and Your word is true. For You are the Resurrection, the Life and the Repose of Your departed servants, O Christ our God, and we render glory to You.
