Importance of this day Mar Yakob of Nisibis
Mar Yakob of Nisibis was the first bishop of Nisibis. According to one tradition Mar Yakob founded the school of Nisibis after the synod of Nicea in 325 AD. The school was probably the first Theological School in the whole Christendom and it was this school that inspired Pope Agapetus (535-536AD) to establish a similar institution in Rome. He is spiritual father of the renowned Syriac writer Mar Aprem.

Prayer of the dayJesus who made us worthy to stand before His pure and holy Altar, bestow Your loving kindness upon us who celebrate Your chosen Mar Yakob, Bishop of Nisibis. May he intercede for us, take our prayers to Your heavenly throne, and obtain for us from Your bounty the grace of the true faith, firm hope and burning charity. Then in his company, we shall come to You and enter Your Kingdom.
