The maturity and fruitfulness of the Church are specially meditated on during the weeks of summer (Qaita). The Syriac word Qaita means "summer". 23 August 2019, Fourth Friday of Qaita
Importance of this day Marth Sh'Mooni and her Seven Sons

This feast commemorates eight Jewish martyrs: Simoni and her seven sons. A ninety year old elder - the law-teacher Eleazar, was brought to trial for his adherence to the Mosaic Law, and he steadfastly underwent tortures and died at Jerusalem. Bravery was likewise shown by the disciples of Saint Eleazar - the Seven Maccabean Brothers and their mother Simoni. They were brought to trial in Antioch by the emperor.

The account of their death is found in chapter 7 of the Second Book of Maccabees. According to the East Syriac tradition, the feast Marth Simoni and her seven Sons is celebrated on the fifth or fourth Friday of the period of Summer. The story of their martyrdom teaches us of their fidelity to the Jewish traditions, the great mercy of God for his people, their hope in the resurrection of the body, of God's reward to those who are faithful to him and of his judgment on those who turn away. Simoni's example of faith as she saw her sons slowly put to death should be a sign to us when our faith is tested. May the prayers of Simoni and her seven sons be with us. Amen. Read more...

Prayer of the dayJesus who helps to flourish peace and blessing in our land, may we be like Your holy martyrs, Saint Simoni and her sons, in our virtue and in our faithfulness to Your Covenant. With them, may we obtain Your heavenly glory. May we struggle to be like You, giving our lives to You who have given Your life for us.

Age of Fruitfulness
